Especially When It Comes To Audio
Gamers love to talk about specs.
Latency, drivers, imaging, noise cancellation, and frequency response. All of these things can make a meaningful difference to your gaming experience.
But there’s one feature that’s surprisingly easy to overlook: Comfort.
The funny thing about comfort is that it’s the one thing you’ll never notice as long as it’s working right. It’s only when you get a bad pair of headphones that you’ll understand why comfort is the most underrated thing in gaming.
You’ll notice the pressure and the constant adjusting. The fact that you need to take them out every few minutes, and then once you put them back in you begin to wonder “how much more do I need to deal with this crap?!”
For something you’ll potentially wear for hours at a time, comfort is severely overlooked. And massively underrated.
Good Earbuds Shouldn’t Feel Like Anything
One of the biggest advantages earbuds have over larger gaming headsets is simply how little of them there is.
There’s no headband pressing against your head. No earcups surrounding your ears. No weight sitting on top of you. A good pair can be remarkably small and lightweight, leaving very little between you and your game.
That’s what makes comfort in great earbuds or IEMs so easy to overlook.
The ideal experience isn’t necessarily that your earbuds feel amazing like how cozy over-ear headphones feel like. It’s that you don’t even register that they’re there.
You simply get to enjoy the game.
When Things Become Uncomfortable, Check the Tips
If your earbuds aren’t comfortable, the earbuds themselves aren’t usually the problem. Yes, some earbuds are angled wrong for your ears so they’ll just never sit right. But quite often, it’s the eartips.
Tips that are too large can create pressure and make your ears feel plugged up. But too small and you may find yourself pushing them deeper or constantly readjusting them because they keep falling out.
The wrong shape can also put pressure on parts of your ear that simply weren’t designed to have something rubbing against them for hours.
The right eartip should give you a secure seal without dealing with excessive pressure.
And don’t assume both ears need the same size. Human ears aren’t perfectly symmetrical (though most are). So it’s perfectly reasonable to use different tip sizes on each side as long as they fit right!
Comfort Makes Playing Better Possible
If your earbuds are uncomfortable, you’ll be distracted. You’re gonna keep adjusting them between rounds and during matches too. Your brain will focus more on what’s on your ears instead of what’s happening on screen. Or at minimum, it’s gonna take up precious mental energy you can use instead for improving your K/D stats.
And we’re sure we don’t need to remind you how those little distractions add up.
A comfortable pair lets you stay focused whether you’re grinding ranked matches, exploring an open world, or settling into a game for an entire evening.
You don’t need your earbuds to feel spectacular.
You need them to stay out of the way.
Comfort Should Be Invisible
Gaming audio is usually judged only by what you can hear.
Comfort is different. It’s often defined by what you don’t feel.
No pressure, constant adjustment, or heat buildup. Zero distractions.
Just hours of gaming with something small enough to disappear into the experience.
And if you’ve decided earbuds aren’t comfortable for you, don’t write them off immediately. Try different eartips first and give your ears a chance to find what works.
Because sometimes the difference between “these hurt after a few minutes” and “I forgot I was even wearing these” isn’t a new pair of earbuds or IEMS, but the right fit.
