5 Game Genres That Benefit The Most From Spatial Audio (Ranked)

Spatial audio is one of gaming audio’s favorite selling points and the premise is simple: hear what’s happening around you, pinpoint where sounds are coming from, and feel more immersed in the game world.

But not every game benefits equally. In some genres, knowing where a sound originates can mean the difference between winning and losing. And in others, it just makes the world feel much more convincing.

So which genres actually get the most out of spatial audio? We’re ranking the top five in this post.

1. Competitive FPS and Tactical Shooters

Few genres make full use of positional or spatial audio outside competitive shooters. When an opponent is moving outside your field of view, footsteps and other sound cues can help you anticipate the fight before you ever see them.

In tactical shooters, where positioning and timing are everything, knowing where a sound comes from. Whether that’s above, below, or around the corner, hearing it first AND accurately placing them can influence your next moves.

In faster arena shooters, it can help you track opponents better in the middle of a chaotic fight. And in tactical-based realistic and extraction shooters, it literally stacks as much advantage to you than the other guy.

Of course, hearing a sound isn’t the same as locating it accurately. Clear imaging and separation matter more than simply making footsteps louder or enabling some proprietary virtual surround sound.

But when the game’s audio is well-designed, spatial positioning can provide genuinely useful information for your next match. Ranked or otherwise.

2. Survival Horror

In survival horror, spatial audio doesn’t just help you understand your surroundings. I mean, it does. But it also makes you afraid of them.

A scrape, some unidentifiable sound moving around in the other room, or footsteps approaching from somewhere that you can’t see at all can completely change how you play the game.

You might not know exactly what’s waiting around the corner, but hearing what could be out there can increase the dread tenfold and make that jumpscare (that you know is coming, because of course it is) way much more terrifying that it needed to be.

That’s what makes this genre such a natural fit with excellent spatial audio, much like how horror movies benefit greatly from peak sound design.

Sound positioning serves both gameplay and atmosphere, helping you track potential threats while making the environment feel even more threatening.

3. Stealth Games

Stealth games turn sound into intel. Since you can’t just barge in, guns blazing, you’re listening for patrols, tracking movement, and figuring out when it’s safe to make your next move and sneak up.

Footsteps and henchmen conversations can help you build a picture of enemy positions in your mind without exposing yourself. A guard moving away from your hiding spot presents a different conundrum from one approaching it: do you wait until they move away again or do you throw one of your limited distractions and make a break for it?

The benefit of spatial audio here isn’t necessarily faster reactions but better decision-making through increased situational awareness. When you’re trying to stay undetected, knowing where exactly enemies are can be far more valuable than having lightning-fast reflexes, or detective mode if you’re being Batman in the Arkham games.

4. Battle Royales and Large-Scale Multiplayer

Much like competitive FPS shooters, battle royales add another layer of complexity: the action isn’t always happening in front of you.

It’s not uncommon for random firefights to start popping off in the distance, or for you to hear vehicles hauling a** towards you all of a sudden. Or when random rustling in the bushes start not feeling random anymore and starts to register more like an enemy squad circling around you.

Accurately recognizing the direction and approximate distance of these sound cues can help you decide whether to investigate, reposition, or avoid an encounter altogether. And of course when the firefight starts, you’ll need the accurate placement of shot locations and excellent separation of sound layers to know exactly what’s going on.

Compared to other more focused competitive shooters, the benefit of spatial audio really depends on whether it’s the quiet part of the BR, or the shooty part. In any case, on a large battlefield, excellent detection and identification of sound is the critical sense you didn’t know you needed until you do.

5. Open-World Adventures and Immersive Sims

These genres round out our list for a slightly different reason. Here, spatial audio contributes more to immersion and environmental awareness than just competitive advantage. After all, it gets tiring to be competing all the time right?

Sometimes we just want to relax and hear the birds singing in the trees, wildlife moving through the undergrowth, NPC’s doing chores in a busy settlement, or weather changes rolling across from afar. These sounds being realistic can make the game world feel more like a real place rather than just some ones and zeroes on your PC or console.

In many open-world adventures, spatial audio is best used to enjoy the experience without needing to pinpoint every sound. That is, until you decide to cause some much needed mayhem or go on a mission or go questing.

Spatial Audio Is Only One Part of the Bigger Picture

These rankings aren’t law, and we may make another list like this on more genres where spatial audio can work well (and yes, that includes 2D games too!)

Why we wanted to write about this is that we wanted to spread the word that spatial audio isn’t only just for accurate positional audio in competitive gaming. The applications are a lot more beneficial for a lot more genres, and we wanted to help people appreciate this amazing piece of tech.

Again, not everything has to be about competition. Sometimes we play competitively and need that clear separation and accurate imaging over flashy surround-sound labels. Sometimes we just want to be immersed in another world, or scare the crap out of ourselves in horror games.
