Your gaming earbuds spend hours sitting in your ears, picking up sweat, dead skin cells, wax, oils, and whatever else happens to be floating around. Keeping them clean isn’t just about appearance. Built-up debris can affect comfort, block the earwax filters, and worse eventually make your earbuds sound muffled up and worse.

The good news is that cleaning them doesn’t need to be complicated.

1. Start With the Ear Tips

This one’s the easiest to do, yet the most neglected because nobody just has time for cleaning ear tips. Even with all that gunk on it. But how do you actually do it?

For basic gunk and debris you can simply wipe it off. For something a bit more in-depth, you have to remove the silicone ear tips from your earbuds. Wash them separately with a little mild soap and warm water, then rinse them thoroughly.

Dry them completely before putting them back on your earbuds. You don’t want moisture getting into the earbud itself.

If you’re using foam tips, don’t soak them. Instead, gently wipe them according to the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations. Foam can break down faster when it’s repeatedly exposed to water or aggressive cleaning. And yes, that includes silicone-lined foam ear tips.

2. Clean the Earbud Nozzles

The small mesh or grille covering the earbud nozzle is where earwax and debris tend to accumulate. If your earbuds’ volume starts to feel lower than they should, you should look into cleaning out the nozzles.

Use a soft, dry brush to gently remove anything sitting on the surface. A clean, dry toothbrush or small electronics brush can work well here. Alternatively, you can use a soft facial tissue or even a microfiber cloth.

The important word is gently. Don’t push debris deeper into the mesh, and don’t poke the grille with a sharp object. You can damage the filter or push material into the driver.

If something is stuck, it’s better to remove it carefully in small amounts than to attack it with force.

3. Wipe Down the Earbuds

For the rest of the earbud, you can use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to wipe away oils and dirt..

If you need a little extra cleaning power, lightly dampen the cloth rather than applying liquid directly to the earbuds. Keep moisture away from charging contacts, buttons, microphones, ports, and openings.

Speaking of cleaning contacts, this is the right time to pick the oil and gunk out of those if you can, using a plastic or wooden toothpick. Do not use any sharp metal object since you can damage the charging pads, or worse, short your earbuds.

Never submerge your earbuds unless they’re specifically designed for it. Some may advertise that they’re waterproof and you can wash them but with a good wipe-down, washing your earbuds isn’t necessary

4. Don’t Forget the Case

Your charging case needs attention too. After all, there’s not much point cleaning your earbuds if you’re immediately putting them back into a dirty case – with all the stuff you’ve just cleaned your earbuds from, right?

Wipe the inside and outside with a dry or lightly dampened microfiber cloth. Pay particular attention to the charging contacts, where dust and debris can accumulate and clean those if necessary. 

Make sure everything is completely dry before putting your earbuds back inside.

How Often Should You Clean Them?

There’s no standard schedule to clean your earbuds, so there’s no need to put this on your Google Calendar. But a quick wipe after regular use and a more thorough cleaning every other week or month is a good starting point for frequent gamers.

If you’ve been sweating heavily, using your earbuds for particularly long sessions, or simply notice buildup around the tips or nozzle, clean them sooner.

The goal isn’t to obsess over cleanliness. We simply have to prevent the grime that accumulates over time from turning into a bigger problem.
