Why Everyone Talks About Soundstage
If you’ve spent any time shopping for earbuds or IEMs, you’ve probably seen the word “soundstage” come up constantly.
A lot of IEMs are designed primarily for music listening, where a wide and spacious presentation can make recordings feel more expansive and immersive. The idea has naturally carried over into gaming, where a wider soundstage is often treated as a sign of better positional or spatial audio.
But there’s a problem with that assumption: a bigger soundstage doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be better at locating sounds in a game.
In fact, there’s another term that matters much more when you’re trying to figure out where that enemy actually is: imaging.
Soundstage and Imaging Aren’t the Same
Soundstage describes the perceived size and space of the audio you’re hearing. How wide does it feel, or how much depth does it seem to have? Does the game sound like it’s happening inside your head, or does it feel like there’s a larger environment surrounding you?
Imaging is different. It’s about how accurately individual sounds can be placed within that space whether that’s wide or not.
Think of soundstage as the size of the map. Imaging, on the other hand, is how accurately you can place the enemy on it.
You can have a huge soundstage and it’s not gonna mean anything if you’ve got poor imaging. Because everything might feel spacious but individual sounds would be difficult to locate. You can also have a very small soundstage but if you’ve got excellent imaging, you might even be better able to tell whether something is coming from your left, right, front, or behind.
In gaming, that matters more.
Why Imaging Matters More in Games
In a competitive shooter, you don’t necessarily need the biggest possible soundscape. What you need is useful information.
Are those footsteps coming from your left or right? Is the enemy in front of you or behind you, or above or below? How far away do they sound? Can you distinguish their movement from everything else happening around you?
Those are all questions answered best with better imaging, not wider soundstages.
A wider soundstage can certainly help create a sense of separation and make the environment easier to perceive, allowing you to detect cues with better precision. But width itself doesn’t tell you where something is. It’s possible to have an expansive presentation that still feels vague when you’re trying to pinpoint a sound. Or worse, sound cues may come from completely different directions or distances with bad imaging.
That’s why an earbud with excellent imaging can be more useful for gaming than one with a much wider soundstage, regardless if you’re playing competitively or not.
When Soundstage Actually Helps
All of this doesn’t mean that soundstage is not important.
A wide and spacious soundstage can be excellent for gaming, particularly in genres where immersion matters more than split-second positional decisions.
Open-world games can hugely benefit from the feeling that environmental sounds extend beyond the immediate space around you in your monitor. Horror games can use that extra sense of space to make noises feel more unsettling. And racing games can feel more thrilling when engine revs, tire noise, and environmental effects occupy a larger virtual environment.
For cinematic single-player games, soundstage can simply make the world feel bigger and just like the movies.
And of course, when playing competitively it’s simply a better experience to have a wider soundstage than it is to not have it. Assuming, of course you still get the accurate spatial information.
What Should You Actually Look For?
If gaming is your priority, imaging should probably be higher on your checklist than soundstage.
Look for earbuds that can place sounds accurately, keep individual cues separated when the game gets busy, and reproduce subtle details without making everything sound congested. A balanced tuning also matters because positional information shouldn’t come at the expense of dialogue, music, environmental effects, or the overall character of the game.
Soundstage is still a useful quality to have but it just shouldn’t be the only thing you’re looking for.
Don’t Chase Width, Chase Accuracy.
A huge soundstage can sound impressive, especially when you’re listening to music or exploring a beautifully designed single-player world.
But a lot of gaming isn’t a competition to see who can create the biggest virtual room.
What matters is whether your earbuds can accurately reproduce what’s happening inside that room, just as accurately as your 4K 240Hz OLED monitor in front of you can.
So the next time you see an IEM advertised as having an enormous soundstage, don’t immediately assume you’ve found the ultimate gaming earbud.
Ask a more useful question instead:
How accurately can it place a sound once it’s inside that soundstage?
Because a bigger map isn’t necessarily better if you can’t tell where anything is inside the game.
