Is There Really an “Endgame” IEM?

Audiophiles And Gamers Might Disagree

These threads are one of the most common in IEM and Audiophile Reddit. And one of the most common questions in general regardless of what hobby you’re in: what’s the endgame device/model/tool/thing? In short, the last “upgrade” that you will ever need.

Realistically? Maybe there’s no such thing.

Part of the reason is simple…

Audio Technology Keeps Improving.

Driver designs always improve and innovate over time. Certain breakthroughs in driver or acoustic tech helps bring certain tuning philosophies out into the world. And every year there’s always gonna be the new shiny thing.

But the bigger reason is that audio is deeply personal.

What Sounds Perfect To One Person Can Sound Boring Or Fatiguing To Someone Else.

Some people want warmth and bass while others prefer detail and brightness. Some love a wide, cinematic presentation while others want a more intimate sound. Then, ask these same people again, and they’ll want something completely different from their main preference. That’s part of what keeps people digging further deeper into this rabbit hole (translation: exploring this hobby) in the first place.

And honestly, that’s a huge chunk of the fun.

A lot of enthusiasts eventually accept that the hobby is more about the journey than reaching the destination.

It’s about experiencing different flavors of sound, different tunings, exploring different driver types, and trying out headphones and earbuds with different strengths and compromises. One pair might be great for competitive gaming while another might shine best music – but only certain genres. However, while this is all fun and deeply personal, gaming is a bit different.

Enjoying Sound May Be Subjective, But Winning And Losing Is Not.

Great gaming audio needs strong sound separation, clean clarity during busy and chaotic happenings, and accurate and precise spatial audio imaging.

You want sounds to stay distinct and easily identifiable when all sorts of hell are coming loose. You want directional cues to be accurate and easy to identify, so there’s no second guessing from you and you’re sure that where you’re aiming, that’s also where your enemies are likely gonna be. And you want your audio to be so immersive that you perceive the game’s world as if it were the one we’re all in right now.

And the best part is that these all exist in tandem or parallel with sound tuning, not against it. So even if some players prefer a leaner, more analytical tuning that pushes details forward; and others want something fuller and more immersive, the one question a good gaming earbud should answer is whether it actually helps you with your game or not?  And whether or not it’s helping you to become better, or it might even be the one thing that’s holding you back.

Because we believe that with good enough hardware, you can have your cake and eat it. You don’t need to compromise information for enjoyment, when, with the right equipment you can have excellent sound tuning WITH the audio separation, accurate imaging, and spatial audio.

Gamers Require Different Things From Audio

That’s why chasing an “endgame” IEM is mostly a trap for the audiophile community, but not necessarily for gamers. By all means go try all sorts of IEMs and figure out what kind of profile works best for you! But make no mistake, just because something plays music well doesn’t mean it can help you perceive your game accurately through sound. Because again, enjoying sound is subjective but winning and losing matches, or finishing a single player campaign, is not.

The good news is that gaming IEMs don’t really come out in as many flavors and variations as with the audiophile IEMs, nor do they come out as frequently since it’s not about the tuning as much as it is the performance boost it gives you. But when they do come out, you can bet they’re aiming to provide better performance that will help you win more matches than lose them.
